Kenya Safari Guide: Everything You Need to Know for Your First African Safari

Going on safari is a life-changing experience. But which park? Which time of year? What to expect? Here’s everything you need to know before your first Kenya safari.

Best Time to Visit

July to October is peak season — the Great Migration crosses the Mara River in dramatic fashion. January to February is the dry season with excellent game viewing and fewer tourists. June is ideal for the calving season in Tanzania’s Serengeti.

Which Parks?

The Masai Mara is the crown jewel for the Migration. Amboseli is famous for elephants against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro. Samburu in the north hosts rare species found nowhere else.

What to Pack

Neutral safari colors (khaki, olive, beige) — avoid blue (attracts tsetse flies) and black & white (distracts buffalo). Layers for cold mornings. A quality telephoto lens. Binoculars. Sunscreen and insect repellent.

How to Choose a Camp

Tented camps are the authentic safari experience. Look for camps with 16 guests or fewer, full-board rates, and guides with Masai Mara Guides Association credentials.
